I was on The Meredith Vieira Show!
Have you ever had a dream that you have spent days, weeks, even years preparing for? I have, and it just came true for me this week. It was a whirlwind of a week. Getting an unexpected email from a producer at the Meredith Vieira Show—telling me they want me to be there in 4 days. Packing, rearranging my time, finding flights for my daughter and sister-in-law to join me was incredible exciting. Constant contact with the producers deciding which story they wanted to feature from my book, The Imagine Project: Stories of Courage, Hope and Love. Constant interviews about questions they might ask. The people on her show work very hard, long hours, but they all love it!
Five days later I found myself sitting in NBC studios at Rockefeller Plaza, doing a pre-interview to be featured as a short clip/movie for the show the next day. The compliments I received from other producers, staff, and executive producers about my book, The Imagine Project: Stories of Courage, Hope and Love were truly amazing. I’ve received numerous accolades and awards for the book, but never from people who have seen and done so much in our world.
This is what I’ve dreamed of; this is what I worked so hard for—to bring a message of hope to the world. It was happening!
Walking in the next day to the actual set, and seeing that Jimmy Fallon was doing his show right across the hall, was thrilling. The people, the security, my name on the dressing room door, hair and make-up done for me—amazing. Then meeting Meredith, her graciousness and sense of gratitude for my being there was heartfelt. Her staff had the same sense of kindness, even in their long hours of hard work and lack of sleep. I can see why Meredith is so successful, her heart is big, her mind is gifted, and she surrounds herself with the perfect people to support her.
The time came. They brought me from my dressing room to the set. Wow, my excitement was building! The music from the show was playing, Kate (the producer working with me) and the young girl who holds the cards stood beside me, and we all danced to get relaxed and have a little fun to lighten the mood. They then lead me out to the couch, the show came back from commercial, and it all began. My movie clip came up, and Meredith began asking me the perfect questions. I hope my answers conveyed what I wanted to say about hope and possibility.
Karina Sanchez, an amazingly courageous young woman from the book, joined me on the couch and told her story as well. Her story of overcoming homelessness and going to college is remarkable. The audience was moved. I was grateful. Books were given away, the audience was clapping, and before you knew it, it was over!
But wait, when we went back to the dressing room, guess who we saw? Luke Bryan and Ron Swanson (Parks and Recreation cast)! Both were guests on the Jimmy Fallon Show. So fascinating and so exhilarating. I am filled with gratitude for all those people who supported me in my journey over the last few years, helping me to make my dreams come true and make a difference in the world.
The most profound lesson I learned. If you want something, see it, know it, feel it as if it’s already happening. When you have a dream, commit to it as if there is no plan B.
What’s next for me? Continue spreading my message to Imagine More; to find hope and possibility regardless of life’s circumstances. I love inspiring audiences to Imagine More, Commit More and Be More.
